The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) publishes reports of crime statistics for all counties in the state annually. In 2017, Dare County reported a total number of 406 crimes, including 23 violent crimes and 383 property crimes. The violent crimes reported include two murders, two rapes, one robbery, and 18 aggravated assaults. The property crimes reported include 101 burglaries, 278 larcenies, and four motor vehicle thefts.

Dare County crime statistics in 2017 shows a considerable decline in the total number of crimes reported over five years in the county. Between 2013 and 2017, there was a decline in five out of seven major crimes. The rate of rape, robbery, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft declined by 71%, 50%, 27%, 28%, and 67% respectively. There was however an increase in murder and aggravated assault by 100% and 100% respectively.
