Crime Statistics for all counties in North Carolina are collated by the State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI). The latest crime records published for Pitt County are for 2017. The records show that there were 846 violent crimes and 5,115 property crimes in the county in that year. Compared to 2013 figures, the violent crime rate increased by 6.7% while the property crime rate shrank by 12.4%.
A closer look at the reported Part I crimes for 2017 shows that there were 5 murders, 36 rapes, 195 robberies, and 610 aggravated assaults. Pitt County also recorded 1,224 burglaries, 3,704 larcenies, and 184 motor vehicle thefts in the same year.
A comparison of 2013 crime data to 2017 records shows that rape and aggravated assault rates increased by 9.1% and 16.2% respectively. The same five-year crime trend also reveals falling murder (54.5%), robbery (12.9%), burglary (29.9%), larceny (4.7%), and motor vehicle thefts (8.9%) rates in Pitt County.
Criminal Records
The Pitt County Clerk of Superior Court and the NCSBI provide criminal history records for the county. While the Clerk provides local criminal histories, the NCSBI’s database includes arrests and criminal convictions for all counties in North Carolina. To obtain a certified copy of a criminal history report, complete Form AOC-CR-314 and submit it to the Clerk's Office in person or send it by mail to:

The Clerk charges $25 for each certified copy of criminal history record. As the central repository of criminal information in the state, NSCBI provides a statewide criminal record search at $14 per record. When requesting a Pitt County criminal record from the agency, complete the Right to Review form and a fingerprint card. Police, incident and accident reports for Pitt County are provided by the Sherriff's Office and the six police departments serving the various jurisdictions in the county. To obtain a police report, contact the relevant police department in the city, borough, or town where the event occurred.
For events that occurred in the City of Greenville, the county seat, visit the Records windows located in the front lobby of the Greenville Police Department at 500 South Greene Street. This window is open to the public from Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Greenville Police Department charges $5.00 for each report. The NCSBI maintains a database of registered sex offenders living in North Carolina counties including Pitt County. The Pitt County Detention Center is the only correctional facility in the county housing federal, state, and county inmates. The jail is maintained by the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office and is located at:

Friends and family can fund an inmate's account by sending government checks, money orders, certified checks, and cashier’s checks made payable to the inmate, by mail. Visitors can also deposit checks and money orders as well as cash in person to the Special Visitation Office of the Detention Center. This office is open from Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Court Records
The Superior Court is the primary court of trial in Pitt County with jurisdiction over all felonies, some misdemeanors and civil cases with claims above $25,000. The District Court is the other court in the county handling most misdemeanor, infractions, municipal ordinance violations and civil disputes with less than $25,000. The Pitt County Clerk of the Superior Court maintains all court records in the county. The Clerk provides a self-service terminal at the office for the public to access these records. To view a particular court record, search by defendant name, case number, or victim/witness name. Certified copies of court records may be requested at the Clerk of Court’s Office. Certified copies cost $2 per document while the fee for photocopies is 25 cents per page.
Vital Records
Pitt County divorce records from 1958 to the present are provided by the Vital Records Office of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). It charges $24.00 for the first copy of a certified record and $15.00 for each additional copy of the same record in the same request. There is an optional $15.00 for expedited request. While a standard request takes up to eight weeks, expedited requests are filled in less than five business days. To make a request, complete the application form and attach a money order, certified check, or business check for the fee. Forward the completed form by mail to:

The North Carolina Vital Records Office also provides marriage, death, and birth certificates for Pitt County. Available marriage certificates are from 1962 to the present while death certificates are from 1930 to the present, and birth certificates are from 1913 to the present.
The steps, requirements, and fees for obtaining certified copies of all these vital records are at the same fees as for divorce records. Use the same application form provided above when requesting certified copies of marriage or death records from the Vital Records Office. To request for copies of a birth record, complete and submit a birth certification application form.
Residents of Pitt County can also obtain all vital records locally. Records of divorces certificates issued in the county are maintained by the Pitt County Clerk of Court. Contact the Office of the Clerk at the address provided above to request copies of a divorce record.
The Pitt County Register of Deeds provides certified copies of birth, death, and marriage records. The Register’s Office charges $10 for each certified copy of any of these records. Complete the Request for Certified Copy Application and submit it to the office, along with a copy of a valid ID and a money order or cashier’s check for the fee.
