Crime Numbers
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation provides crime statistics for Rockingham County. In 2017, Rockingham County had a total of 272 violent crimes, including 6 murders, 20 rapes, 53 robberies, and 193 aggravated assaults. There were also 2,258 property crimes including 625 burglaries, 1,523 larcenies, and 110 motor vehicle thefts.
Between 2013 and 2017, larcenies (-24.7%), and motor vehicle thefts (-12.7%) decreased. However, murders (67%), rapes (300%), robberies (29.3%), aggravated assaults (30.4%), and burglaries (47.1%) all increased.
Criminal Records
Criminal records in Rockingham County are available to the general public from the Clerk of Court. Download and complete a Request for Criminal Record Search Form. Infraction records are also available to the public through the Criminal Record Search Form. Infractions in North Carolina are non-criminal violations. Each record costs $25. Requests are available by mail and in person.

Requesters may also search, view, and email criminal records for free at the public access computers in the clerk’s office. Records accessed this way are non-certified. However, charges may apply for printing viewed records.
Arrest records are available at the Rockingham Sheriff’s Office’s Records Division. To submit a request, visit the Records Division. The North Carolina’s State Bureau of Investigation maintains a public database of sex offenders living in the state. To find sex offenders in Rockingham County, use the Offender Search tool provided and select Rockingham from the County drop-down menu. Filter search results using the offender’s First Name, Last Name, Age, Zip Code, City, and Status. The Offender Search also allows requesters to find records by Latitude/Longitude, and by Sex Registration Number.
The Rockingham County Detention Center is the only detention facility in the county. The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office runs the facility but does not provide an online inmate roster. To find information about an inmate, contact the Sheriff’s Office.
To fund an inmate’s account, visit the Sheriff’s Office’s Lobby Kiosk on a weekday anytime between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. or from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The County Jail only receives money orders made out to inmates. The amount on these money orders cannot exceed $100. Inmates may also receive funds via Access Corrections.
Inmates may receive visitors three days a week. These include Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Saturdays from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. All visitors must arrive at the facility and sign in at least 15 minutes before the end of visiting hours each day. Visitors must also schedule their visitations by contacting the Sheriff’s Office. Each inmate may receive a maximum of 4 visitors per week. All visitors must be at least 16 years old.
Family and friends may also send letters to inmates. All letters must be delivered in envelopes not larger than 6”x 9”. Envelopes may not have any information apart from the delivery and return details.
Court Records
The Rockingham County Judicial Center operates a Superior Court and a District Court. The Superior Court has jurisdiction over all criminal and civil cases. It hears criminal cases, including felonies, misdemeanors, and infractions. The Superior Court also hears cases with claims over $25,000 and all other cases without a financial limit. The Rockingham District Court has limited jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases and hears civil cases involving amounts up to $25,000. It also handles domestic cases and juvenile matters. Both courts are at the Rockingham County Judicial Center.

Property records are available at the Rockingham County Register of Deeds. Use the E-Vault Search tool to find these records. Property records from 1996 are available under the Real Property Index tab. The Old Index Books tab has property records from 1789 - 1995. The Register of Deeds however restricts the public from viewing private information on these records such as social security numbers and employer taxpayer identifications.

The Rockingham County Register of Deeds maintains vital records in the county. Requests for vital records can be submitted online, by mail, and in person. Marriage records are only available from 1867 while birth and death records are available from 1913.
Each certified copy of a vital record costs $10. Certified copies are limited to the persons named on the records and their current spouses, siblings, children, grandchildren, grandparents, and legal representatives. Anyone may request a non-certified copy for 25 cents. All online requests cost an additional $3.50 convenience fee.
To order for a vital record online, visit the Register of Deeds’ vital records request page. Complete the desired application form with personal details and information about the person named on the record. Upload a valid government-issued photo I.D. Requesters may receive online orders by mail or pick them up at the Rockingham County Register of Deeds Office.
